New Glass
Posted in Latest, News - May 9, 2010 - tim
I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to decide on a new walk-around camera/lens setup, for both stills and HD video, but I finally pulled the trigger. (Thanks to my patient wife who allowed me to dip into my allowance
)
Went with the Canon EOS 7d – body only – with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM zoom lens.
Looks like a great, portable, flexible setup. If anyone has any comments (the photo / video crowd is easily one of the most opinionated I’ve seen, outside of the politicos) fire away. And yes, I know it’s not full-frame…

Tim,
you are going to be a very, very happy man… I’ve been shooting all kinds of odds and ends with my 7D over the last few months… in fact, I just finished a little piece for Sonoma County that had to be done “down and dirty” and it was *entirely* captured with the 7D (even the audio -> onboard mic!)… check it out!

I have other samples to share if you’re interested… just let me know and I’ll send you links!
congrats on the new acquisition!
all my best,

Beau:
Happy to hear that, from a real filmmaker.
Lovely spot you made. Surprised that’s the onboard mic (I was already researching sound gear, assuming the mic wasn’t great …).
Would love to see more – send links. And I’ll obviously be bugging you for tips once everything comes in
Great to see you and yours in Petaluma the other weekend!
Cheers,
ts

Tim,
My favorite lens is the 70-200 2.8L. Pricey, but gorgeous shots. A good one to par with what you got with the camera. Of course, you may not need all the bulk and weight of this lens, since it’s best suited for a full-frame. You might be very happy with an EF-S lens like the EF-S 55-250, but I think you need a fast lens in your arsenal. 2.8, 1.8, 1.2, etc.

I’m doing most of my shooting right now using the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8. It’s pretty fast, the zoom range is great for walking around, and it’s built like a tank – some say it should have been designated an L lens.
I’ll probably be buying the 50mm f/1.8 prime soon. And a macro. Since I’m shooting a fair amount of video, and about to start playing with timelapse, the fast lenses are a blast.
